SLOW DOWN
The coastal town of Goolwa south of Adelaide is the first Cittaslow to be proclaimed outside of Europe. This happened in March 2007 and was closely followed by Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of NSW. These towns are now included in a select group of towns which have been identified in 50 countries. While Cittaslow towns and cities (no more than 50,000 population) developed from the SlowFood movement, there is much more involved. The Cittaslow manifesto defines them as 'towns where people are still curious about times pasts, rich in theatres, squares, cafes, workshops, restaurants and spiritual places....where people are still aware of the slow passing of the seasons, marked by genuine products, respecting tastes, health and spontaneous customs.'
