GO BANANAS!
World class sportspeople like Australian cricketers, Tour de France cyclists and professional tennis players all agree on one thing; if you are looking for an energy boost, reach for a banana. “Bananas have three great attributes to offer anyone involved in sport,” says Sports Dietitian Glenn Cardwell, author of the sports nutrition manual Gold Medal Nutrition. “Bananas are easy to eat, they taste great, and they generate muscle energy to sustain the athlete during events. Bananas provide sugars in an easy-to-peel package. Once digested, the sugars become glucose in the blood. Glucose is the very same sugar that muscles use for energy, and the reason why the banana is a favourite of both elite and recreational athletes around the world.” The best banana for any active person is a ripe fruit, one that has begun to have brown mottling on the skin. A riper banana has had a lot of its starch broken down to glucose, making it both sweeter and quicker to digest. As the glucose is absorbed from the intestine it goes to the muscles to be burned as fuel during muscle contractions.

APPLES AREN"T ALWAYS JUST APPLES
Good old apples, just got a new member of the family! Jazz is Australia’s newest apple variety with a catchy name that is set to put a new swing into apple-eating. Introduced to Australian growers by Montague Fresh, one of Australia's largest handlers of locally grown apples and stone fruit, it is a cross between Braeburn and Royal Gala - a marriage which results in a superbly sweet, tangy apple with a crisp texture. Small to medium in size, with a shiny green pink-red blushed skin, the dense butter yellow flesh of Jazz delivers a taste to match its fine appearance. Over the next four years, Montague Fresh will work with some of Australia’s leading apple growers to plant around 500,000 Jazz trees in specially selected cool-climate regions of Australia. Batlow (NSW), Huon Valley (TAS), Adelaide Hills (SA), Stanthorpe (QLD), Manjimup (WA) and Southern Victoria are among those to have been identified by Montague. SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS SHOWS THE WAY
An innovative program launched in the Southern Highlands last week by Minister for Tourism Matt Brown, will see local residents become tourism ambassadors for the region. The Ambassador Passport Program is one that could (and perhaps should) catch on around the country. Almost half (46 per cent) of the 1.4 million domestic and international visitors to the Southern Highlands each year come to visit friends and relatives. The program rewards locals for taking visitors to see and experience the region’s attractions. The Southern Highlands tourism industry has packaged and presented discounts and freebies to the region’s natural attractions, food and wine, gardens, antiques and heritage sites. Initiated by the regional tourism industry and the Wingecarribee Shire Council, the program encourages visitors to stay longer, see and do more, and spend more. It is hoped it will boost tourism, promote job creation and bring more income to the region. The Ambassador Passport Program will run until 31 March 2009. Tourism to the Southern Highlands generates $170 million in revenue and creates the most employment in the region.

LONDON LEADS THE WAY
All 40 chefs participating in Taste of London will be competing for the coveted title of “Green Fingers” - an award given to the chef with the biggest and best produce by the time Taste of London takes place in Regents Park over the 19th - 22nd June. Pictured, a host of London chefs, including Michel Roux Junior, Anthony Worrall Thompson and Aldo Zilli planting a range of produce at Regents Park. Taste of London is the capital’ s most exciting restaurant, food and drink event. In its fifth year as one of the World’s Top Food Festivals, it is the foodie event of the year.
It is happening here too. A couple of Sydney chefs are going one better, by buying a farm to provide their restaurant with the freshest produce. Sean Moran and Michael Robertson from Sean's Panaroma in North Bondi have bought a property at Bilpin on which they will raise chickens, goats and pigs for their restaurant. Jared Ingersoll from inner-Sydney Danks Street Depot will keep things nearer home with a community garden at Waterloo, and there are rumours of a chef's rooftop garden in another suburb. Stephanie Alexander's Kitchen Garden Foundation aimed at encouraging schools to set up gardens for students to grow their own produce has been in place for a couple of years and was pledged $12.8 million in an ALP election promise late last year. Nicholson Street Public School in the Sydney suburb of Balmain has gone ahead and begun its own garden based on Stephanie Alexander's model.

The produce quality will be secondary to none. Noosa, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, is home to some of the country's finest fisherman, farmers, cheese makers and producers. The dinners provide the opportunity for the public to meet the over twenty local growers and producers, and for them to showcase their produce. THE HUON FOOD TRAIL
In late June Michael Higgins of Huon Bush Retreats is set to release a booklet, The Huon Food Trail, which promotes the fresh produce and growers of the region south of Hobart. Higgins’ will encourage guests to visit producers at cellar doors, farm gates and other outlets (specialty producers of preserves, for example) to buy ingredients for the menus and recipes included in the booklet. Featured producers include the Snowy Range Trout Farm, the roadside stalls at Franklin and the Huon Valley Mushroom Farm.
Higgins hopes that hunter gatherers will bring the ingredients back to their accommodation and try the recipes out for themselves. For those who would rather sample the regions wines on the deck of their cottage than cook, Higgins and Co. can prepare the dishes.
The booklet will be produced four times a year to reflect seasonal influences and will include three different menus, three local food and wine trail itineraries as well as recipes. The autumn menu has been set and the booklet is expected to be ready for April. In the first instance the booklet will be available free to guests staying at Huon Bush Retreats. www.huonbushretreats.com

WHISKY TOURS FOR TASSIE
On this new four day tour you become the distiller. Whisky aficionados and the just plain curious can experience every aspect of the whisky maker’s art. Lark Distilleries’s guest distillers even travel to the Tasmanian Central Highlands and dig their own blocks of peat from the Lark (peat) bog. In fact, every element in the time-honoured tradition of single malt whisky production is seen and experienced the peat, smoking the malted barley, fermenting, distilling, and filling an oak barrel. In something of a considerable option, guests can select a special 20-litre oak cask at the cooperage and have it filled with the 65% proof whisky they have helped nurture. The people at Lark Distillery believe that there is no tour like this anywhere in the world. Details of the one-, two, and four-day tours: www.larkdistillery.com/tours
