MAREEBA’S BUMPER COFFEE HARVEST
Coffee plantation owners at Mareeba in Tropical North Queensland expect their best ever harvest this year as growing conditions have been particularly favourable during the 2008 season. The region’s oldest coffee estate, Skybury Coffee, is currently harvesting a crop which is anticipated to top 50 tonnes.
Managing director Ian MacLaughlin, who is also chairman of the Australian Coffee Growers Association, says this year’s regional yield will be the best ever. Last year’s Mareeba coffee harvest was almost 100 tonnes. The coffee harvesting period is June/July and while the biggest demand continues to be from domestic Australian buyers, approximately 25 percent of the harvested coffee will be sold internationally to coffee distributors and wholesalers in Europe and the USA. Mareeba's coffee crop sells for between AUD$7 - $10 per kilogram wholesale. The current average global wholesale coffee price is approx AUD$3. No further expansion of the number of trees planted is anticipated for next year, however the yield / tonnage is expected to increase from the existing plantings/acreage with the right growing conditions again.

In season Heritage tomatoes
How often have you been disappointed by the taste or lack of it in a tomato? Modern tomatoes are often insipid and flavourless but that’s all set to change courtesy of some Gatton farmers located in one of south east Queensland’s most productive farming areas, who were encouraged to try something new. Armed with some Diggers seeds and a lifetime of knowledge, the Sutton family is growing heritage varieties of tomato that have distinct and unusual flavours. Their handsome specimens of heritage tomatoes come in all shades and sizes, varieties that have almost died out because in our fast food world convenience is valued over taste. There are big beefy Bullock Hearts, striped Green and Black Zebra, Tigerella, baby Romas and Black Russians, among others. Sutton’s heritage tomatoes are being snapped up by shoppers at the Powerhouse, Mitchelton and West End markets and are available from November through to June.
