Located at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Bundaberg is coral clad and country-bred. The reef offers recreation options and some of the state's best seafood, while the magnificent hinterland provides rugged beauty and crops producing foodstuffs to round out almost any meal.
This fertile area is filled with sugar and mangoes, avocados—and more sugar. Seen from the air, the plantations resemble a pale green corduroy rug thrown carelessly over the countryside. In reality, sugar is a massive industry, one which not only sweetens the economy, but also distils into the famous Bundy Rum.
Mention Kingaroy to any Australian, and the connection is made. Peanuts. Most people may never have seen these nuts growing, but they do know that Kingaroy is the acknowledged peanut capital of the country. Yet there is wine locally too, as well as macadamias, sugar and bacon, and an infant olive oil industry in the Burnett Valley which looks set to expand dramatically in the next few years.
World Heritage-listed Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island, is part of this region that bites into the state around Maryborough. A fishing paradise, the region is equally attractive to fish-lovers, as the local restaurants know exactly what to do with each day's catch.
