Entire books have been written to try to distil into words the magic of this area. Largely they have failed, because the Barossa weaves history with sensuality; tangles the tangible with myth and vision.

The roots of the place are solid and sensible, full of Germanic hard work and integrity. Yet somehow the light and air of this new country that offered those northern settlers freedom and a future, worked subtly on them after their arrival in the mid 1800s. They continued to make their bread and sausages and wine, and display their pickles, yet the new-found peace gave them room to also relax and enjoy the fruits of their labours.

For that is what you sense here. An enjoyment of the creation of people’s hands and the good land. This place buzzes year long with festivals and music, punctuated of course with popping corks. Food and wine intermingle perhaps better in the Barossa than anywhere else in the country. All the necessary adjuncts—dried fruit, cheeses, processed meats, pantry products and chicken—are here.

Basically, the Barossa is South Australia’s picnic hamper. Just don’t forget to bring the corkscrew.
