RESTAURANT 08 ROCKS!

Too many cooks? Not at Restaurant 08, held at the Royal Hall of Industries at Moore Park, Sydney, from August 11-12. Probably because this annual show, despite the name, attracts chefs and a host of other food industry professionals.

Well-geared to cater for all comers, over 20 seminars led by high-profile industry speakers, were available all day, every day in three main interest areas: Talking Business (the actual nuts and bolts of running a restaurant), Culinary Skills, and Wine World.

One of particular interest for regional people was ‘Surviving the Seasons in the Regions’. The panel, moderated by Lyndey Milan, explored and suggested ideas for generating revenue out of season, staffing solutions and a number of other common problems for regional restaurateurs and members of the food industry. The panel discussion between Stefano de Pieri, from Stefano’s, Mildura, Victoria, Fiona Hoskins, Fee and Me, Launceston, Tasmania, David Rayner, River House, Noosaville, Queensland, and Michael Manners, from Manners & Borg, Orange, NSW, was spirited and lively and of great help to the many who attended.

The hall itself was packed with the stands of around 150 exhibitors offering tastes, advice and information. Regional food was well-represented with three major state displays – Victoria on your Menu, Flavour South Australia and Queensland Grown, plus Taste of the Illawarra, and Taste of Orange – each supported by a number of regional exhibitors.

Individual regional exhibitors were there too: Gwydir Grove and many other olive oil producers, Australian Gourmet Chestnuts, Hunter Valley Cheese Company, Pyramid Salt, Snails Bon Appetite, Yarra Valley Dairy and more.

Naturally, there was a large number of wineries from most parts of the country also exhibiting, as for restaurateurs this is a great opportunity to learn more about new wines. Beers, coffees, olive oils, provedores, magazines, equipment – the menu for restaurateurs was wide ranging and the good attendance proved it suited all tastes.

Podcasts of "Surviving the Seasons in the Regions"  should be available soon on www.irunarestauranttoo.com

MUDGEE AT BALMORAL

At midday on Sunday August 10th Sydney’s blue skies gave way to rain but this didn’t dampen the spirits of the stallholders or visitors at Mudgee’s fabulous annual event. Beautiful Balmoral Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches has been the venue for Mudgee at Balmoral for several years.

This year again saw dozens of Mudgee district vignerons crating up their best drops for a trip to Sydney and proudly offering tastes to the hundreds of visitors that packed the park right on one of the most stunning waterfronts in the city.

Regional food people were represented too: Mowat’s of Mudgee, Mudgee Honey Haven, The Grape Essential, High Valley Wine & Cheese Co, Organic Pork, and The Really Stuffed Olive Co. among others.

There is now the long wait until next year’s event unless…… and here is the real solution. Get in the car and take a trip to this lovely region! Then you can spend as long as you like, visiting the wineries and local producers in their own environment.

C-CHANGE, TREE CHANGE

“Make the Move, today” was the catch cry of the fifth annual Country Week Expo held daily from August 8-10 at Rosehill Events Centre in Sydney. The hall was packed with around fifty stands featuring most areas of NSW. In addition there were all the ancillary services which city-people, transferring to the country might be interested in knowing about.

Police, health services, employment, transport systems and many more were on hand to help people realise that life in the country can be every bit as comfortable as (many would say more than) an urban lifestyle. One stand spelt it out even more clearly with clocks showing the tiny time it would take in a country town to reach work from home.

Real estate options were well-represented too, offering an alternative to Sydney’s housing affordability crisis, long commute times and high cost of living. It was a great showcase of the state – and visitors were truly able to do what the expo offered – to  ‘Walk NSW in a day’. www.countryweek.com.au/nsw

Next month the Country Week Expo: "Live & Work in Regional Queensland", will be held from 19 – 21 September 2008 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Southbank. www.countryweek.com.au/qld.htm

CITY SHOWCASES COUNTRY

It must be the time of year for food events in Sydney. From July 25-27, 2008, the Organic Expo enticed everyone from sceptics to devotees into Hall 1 of the Sydney Exhibition Centre to see what the over 200 exhibitors had to offer.

Few would have been disappointed. There was organic baby wear, sheets, wines,  and cleaning products. Amongst the food exhibits which took up almost half the hall, there everything from steak to snack foods, olives, herbs, honey, cheese and chocolate was available for enthusiastic sampling by the many visitors. Green & Black’s, maker of stunning organic chocolate, were the sponsor of this year’s show. Full details on www.organicexpo.com.au

The Organic Expo will be on again this time next year too in Melbourne, from July 24-26, 2009 at the Royal Exhibition Building. Email exhibitors@organicexpo.com.au

Then, on July 29th, the Regional Food Fair 2008 was held at Homebush. A gathering of over 400 NSW farmers – members of the NSW Farmers Association (www.nswfarmers.org.au) – in one of the Showground pavilions was joined by food and wine industry people and other guests.

Around the pavilion 15 tasting stations had been set up featuring regional NSW produce, highlighting the diversity and excellence of this large state. The dishes included magnificent NSW moisture-infused pork, Mirrool Creek lamb, the largest blueberries, carrot shots with ginger foam and an amazing tomato ‘martini’ made from painstakingly strained tomatoes and served with a baby bocconcini and olive stirrer.

The delicious menu was created by  Sydney Showground’s head chef, Bryan Fawcett. The food was teamed with NSW wines of course and as diners moved between the various stands, models presented mini-fashion shows.
